5 Things You Need to Know Now for Your Health (Oct. 26)

1. Your burger order probably comes with a side of antibiotics.

We give up a lot of control over what goes into our food when we decide to eat out – the extra fat and carbs seem like a fair trade for a night out with friends and a break from cooking. But this new collaborative report from the National Resources Defense Council and five other reputable organizations suggests you might be getting more than you bargained for on your plate. It looked at 25 different popular burger chains and found that 22 of them got an F on their antibiotics policies – suggesting they’re contributing to our epidemic of antibiotic resistance. If you’re craving a burger, consider dining at one of the only two restaurants that scored an A: Shake Shack and BurgerFi. (CNN)

2. Microplastics are finding their way into your gut.

Ever since scientists discovered microplastics in bottled water, table salt, tap water, and seafood (to name a few), we’ve wondered where else they could be found. And now we know: If you’ve consumed anything on the above list, chances are there are microplastics in your gut, suggests a new pilot study out of the Medical University of Vienna. The researchers detected nine different kinds of plastics in stool samples of participants. It’s too early to know the health consequences, but considering plastic’s link to severe adverse health outcomes including cancer, impaired immunity, birth defects, and more, we’re keeping an eye out for additional findings. 3. The effects of vaping are scarier than we thought.

For years, people have been vaping as a “safe” form of smoking cigarettes, and sometimes even as a tool for gradually kicking the habit. As the theory goes, inhaling vaporized liquid nicotine is a healthier way to get your nicotine fix than inhaling burning tobacco and all the toxins (cadmium, beryllium, nickel, and more) that come with it. But in recent months, scientists have released studies showing that vaping carries toxins and dangers of its own, including an increased risk of heart attack. If you or a loved one are vaping, it might be time to reconsider the habit. (Business Insider)

4. Your “non-toxic” nail polish might still be toxic.

Those of us aiming to eliminate toxins rejoiced when a few cosmetic brands came out with “3-free” nail polishes – bottles without three chemicals that have been linked with serious health concerns: dibutyl phthalate (DnBP), toluene, and formaldehyde. But Harvard researcher Anna Chan recently found that some of those same 3-free polishes contain other dangerous chemicals, including two endocrine disruptors: triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and didiethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). Want to find a polish you can trust? Use the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, where you can search for cosmetics and personal care products and their potential hazards. 5. Grandma was right: Sunshine does kill germs.

Remember how your grandmother would open windows as soon as it was warm (or cool) enough to stand it? Or how she’d hang a blanket out on a clothesline to get rid of a musty smell? As it turns out, she was really on to something. Researchers at the University of Oregon found that sunlit rooms had 50% less viable bacteria than dark rooms. It’s time to throw open those curtains and let the sun shine in – disinfecting has never been so easy! (NPR)
