Question: Should I take a multivitamin?

Dr. Rawls: So how about a multivitamin? Half the country takes a multivitamin every day. I think a lot of people put multivitamins and herbal extracts together. They could not be more different.

Multivitamins are nutrients. Nutrients are substances that cells need to function. So cells need to produce energy, so they need carbohydrates and fats. Cells need to build proteins, so they need amino acids. Cells, when they’re building proteins, they need cofactors and minerals to make those basic proteins that they’re building work properly.

And so, all those are nutrients, and cells do need nutrients, but they can only use so much nutrients at one time. So taking a multivitamin, it’s okay. Probably you get just as much or even better from your food. But if you want a little extra, I think that’s fine.

But multivitamins don’t provide the level of cellular protection that herbs do. So herbs, not that great a source of nutrients. And they’re a really poor source of calories. I mean, you would starve to death if you were trying to survive off of eating herbs alone. But they have these robust protective chemicals that are really, really important. So, yeah, herbs are going to give you things that food isn’t and also that multivitamins aren’t.
