Question: Can herbs fight fatigue?
Tim Yarborough: This one’s from Rich. A live question that came in. Dr. Rawls, what herbs are fatigue fighters? What would be your favorites there?
Dr. Rawls: All of them. That’s simple. You know? What fatigue is, is when cells throughout your body are stressed. All right? We typically try to treat fatigue. There are no drugs that treat fatigue because there are no drugs that treat cellular stress. Fatigue is rooted in cellular stress. When cells are stressed, they run their mitochondria down. They lose energy. They can’t function as well. And you feel it as fatigue. It’s as simple as that. It’s all cellular.
And a general symptom like fatigue means that all the cells in your body are being stressed by something. The solution for fatigue is to get to the root of the stress. Sometimes, that’s microbes. Sometimes, it’s toxins. They’re various kinds of things. But when we look at the herbs, any herb, the everyday herbs of any variety are reducing cellular stress. They’re protecting cells from stress so cells can recover from being stressed and regain their capacity for energy.
That can take time. That can take a lot of time. For my struggle, that was years to get my full energy back. But you know, even now, I’ve been fully recovered for, oh gosh, seven to 10 years now. And even now, at age 64, you know, you go through periods of low energy. And typically, it’s when I’ve been stressed in some way, and I increase my herbs for a few weeks, and my energy level comes back up. But it takes time. You have to — healing takes time.
Herbs promote healing. It’s a totally different thing. Drugs don’t promote healing. Herbs promote healing. Healing takes time. Those two things are independent, and it is really the fundamental difference between drugs and herbs. So, yeah, most of your herbs are going to do that.
Now, as far as energizing your cells, yeah, you can take caffeine that energizes you. That’ll give you a boost but what that’s doing is artificially driving your cells harder, and you’re going to pay for that. If you’re fatigued, and you’re driving your cells with stimulants, you’re going to pay for it because you’re going to run them down even faster. You’re going to drive them harder. Burn down their mitochondria harder. You’re going to crash from it. Simple as that. So stimulants aren’t the answer for fatigue.
